Guided threat focus and reappraisal was better than safety seeking behaviour for reducing fear in claustrophobia.

چکیده
Intervention Participants were allocated to 1 of three 30 minute exposure conditions: GTR (n=13); SBU (n=17); and exposure alone (n=12). Exposure consisted of 2 BATs: a claustrophobia chamber (BAT 1) and a tall filing cabinet (BAT 2). All participants were told that claustrophobia is driven by concerns about lack of fresh air or being trapped. The GTR group was told of the efficacy of eliminating fear by focusing on the perceived threat and using evidence to counter the threat. The SBU group was told that several safety strategies were available to them: opening a small window in the chamber, standing near the exit door, checking the latch to make sure it was unlocked, and talking with the experimenter through an intercom. The exposure alone group was told that repeated exposure to the phobic situation would help them overcome their fear.

The effects of safety-seeking behavior and guided threat reappraisal on fear reduction during exposure: an experimental investigation.
We examined the effects of safety-seeking behavior and guided threat focus and reappraisal on fear reduction during exposure. Participants (N=46) displaying marked claustrophobic fear were randomized to one of three 30-min exposure conditions: (a) guided threat focus and reappraisal; (b) safety-behavior utilization; or (c) exposure only control. Tripartite outcome assessments during a behaviora...

To test predictions derived from the emotional processing theory of fear reduction, claustrophobics N 58 were randomized to one of four exposure conditions: (a) exposure with guided threat reappraisal, (b) exposure with a cognitive load distracter task, (c) exposure with both guided threat reappraisal and cognitive load distracter task and (d) exposure without guided threat reappraisal or c...
متن کاملThe effects of safety behaviors on the fear of contamination: an experimental investigation.
The strategies used by anxious individuals to prevent feared outcomes, known as safety behaviors, are thought to maintain pathological anxiety by preventing the disconfirmation of inaccurate threat beliefs. However, it is possible that safety behaviors might also contribute to the development and exacerbation of anxiety symptoms. The present study tested this notion in a sample of undergraduate...
متن کاملComponent fears of claustrophobia associated with mock magnetic resonance imaging.
A conceptualization of claustrophobia [Rachman, S., & Taylor, S. (1993). Analyses of claustrophobia. Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 7, 281-291] was evaluated in the context of magnetic resonance imaging. One hundred eleven students responded to questionnaires that quantified fear of suffocation, fear of restriction, and sensitivity to anxiety symptoms. Sixty-four of them were then exposed to a m...
متن کاملPsychometric properties of the French and English versions of the Claustrophobia Questionnaire (CLQ).
Research suggests that Claustrophobia, defined as the fear of enclosed spaces, may be better conceptualized as two separate, but related fears: (1) the fear of suffocation, and (2) the fear of restriction. The Claustrophobia Questionnaire (CLQ) is a self-report measure designed to assess these two fears. The original English version of the CLQ has demonstrated excellent psychometric properties....
